The role
Associates at this firm carry matters. From the outset you will be responsible for the conduct of files under supervision: reading the brief, drafting the pleadings, preparing the case theory, and appearing.
First year
Expect the first three months to be weighted towards drafting and research, with court attendance alongside a senior member of the firm. From roughly the fourth month, associates appear on their own matters on routine dates, with the supervising member appearing on contested hearings. By the end of the first year most associates are conducting a portfolio of matters end to end.
Practice allocation
We do not silo associates immediately. Litigation associates will see matrimonial, criminal, civil and consumer work in their first year, because the procedural instincts transfer and because it is impossible to know what suits you until you have done it. Specialisation follows, usually in the second year, and is discussed rather than assigned.
Requirements
- Enrolment with a State Bar Council.
- One to three years’ post-enrolment experience for the litigation role; corporate applications are considered from qualified candidates with relevant drafting experience.
- Working knowledge of the BNS, BNSS and BSA alongside the codes they replaced, and of the CPC.
- Ability to write clearly in English. Working Hindi is an advantage in the trial courts.
What to send
A curriculum vitae, a covering note of no more than a page, and one piece of your own legal writing — a pleading, a research note, a memo. Redact anything confidential. The writing sample matters more than the curriculum vitae.
